Bangladesh and India discuss pending issues including Rohingya solution

NEW DELHI, 30 September 2020, (TON): India and Bangladesh held discussion during the 6th Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) meeting held on Tuesday. The meeting was held between Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and his Bangladesh counterpart A. Abdul Momen to discuss a number of issue including border killings of Bengalis, sharing of the Teesta waters and Rohingya issue.

The Joint Statement acknowledged Dhaka’s concern on the continued killing of nationals by the Border Security Force (BSF), Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen revealed that least 25 Bangladesh nationals were killed and dozens injured between January and June this year in firing from the BSF.

Bangladesh raised a number of irritants in bilateral ties during the exchange with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and both sides agreed to hold the long-delayed meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission.

Bangladesh asked Indian side to find solution to the Rohingya refugee crisis and urged New Delhi to play its due role as elected Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations and take up the issue at the UN Security Council to help in early repatriation of the Rohingya community to Myanmar.

Taking opportunity of the discussion both sides also discussed joint celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Liberation War. The Civil War that took place in 1971, led Army of the Western part of Pakistan to suppress popular uprising in East Pakistan. This ultimately led to separation of two wings and an independent country as Bangladesh.  During the Civil War, the United States played a major role in the disintegration of Pakistan into two independent States. Taking benefit of the opportunity, Indian announced war and send its forces in Pakistani areas.
