GENEVA, 18 September 2020, (TON): The Human Rights Council agreed in principle to a resolution submitted by the European Union to launch closer UN monitoring of alleged rights violations in Belarus. 

As per the details provided by Council President Elisabeth Tichy-Fisslberger at the 47-member state Geneva forum; there were 23 votes in favour, 2 against and 22 abstensions.

Russia submitted 17 amendments to the resolution but all of them were rejected. The Council gave the office of UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet a mandate to closely monitor the situation in Belarus and submit an oral report with recommendations by end of this year.
