MAURITANIA, 22 July 2026 (TON): More than 140 refugees and migrants are feared dead or missing after a boat travelling from The Gambia to Europe became stranded off Mauritania, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).
The boat was rescued after drifting for 25 days, reaching Nouadhibou with 38 survivors and several bodies. Two children survived but lost their families during the journey.
