NEW DELHI, June 17, 2026 (TON): India has rejected a draft circulated by the Chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) process on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms, saying it fails to reflect the views of the majority of member states.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Harish Parvathaneni, said the proposal focuses on adding more non-permanent members, while many member states support the addition of new permanent members, a view that the draft does not adequately reflect.

He said greater representation should be given to developing countries of the Global South so that the Security Council can better represent today's world.

Parvathaneni also called for formal text-based negotiations with a clear timeline to ensure that the reform process moves forward more effectively.
