Myanmar Agrees to Receive 5,000 Rohingya from Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 July 2026 (TON): Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Myanmar has agreed to take back 5,000 Rohingya asylum seekers currently living in Malaysia. He said the agreement was made possible through good diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Malaysia hosts around 126,000 Rohingya refugees registered with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). The Rohingya have faced decades of persecution and have largely been denied citizenship in Myanmar, making them one of the world's biggest stateless communities.

Myanmar has not officially confirmed the announcement, while the UNHCR has not yet commented on the reported agreement. More details about the planned return have not been released.
