BAMACO , 19 July 2026 (TON): Rebel fighters launched an ambush on a Malian army convoy in the northern Gao region on Saturday, leaving many soldiers dead or captured, according to statements from the armed groups.

The Malian army confirmed that its convoy and allied forces were attacked by armed groups in a remote area. Military officials said a counteroffensive was underway but did not release details about the number of casualties.

The al-Qaida-linked group JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) both claimed responsibility, saying the attack caused heavy casualties and significant equipment losses for government forces.
