WASHINGTON D.C. June 19, 2026 (TON): New York city leaders are renewing calls to ban horse-drawn carriage rides after a young Indian tourist, Romanch Mahajan, died in a tragic accident involving a runaway horse carriage in Central Park.
The accident occurred when a carriage horse bolted after its driver stepped away from the carriage. Mahajan reportedly jumped from the moving carriage while trying to help his mother after she fell out. He suffered fatal head injuries and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Authorities ruled his death accidental.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin told that legislative body will hold a hearing , which will ban horse carriages. The Mayor of New York Zohran Mamdani showed support to end the industry.
