ISLAMABAD , 5 December 2024, (TON): The interior Minister of Pakistan , Mohsin Naqvi announced that Afghan citizens without legal documents are no longer allowed to reside in Islamabad after 31 December 2024.
The Interior Minister stated: "All Afghans will no longer be allowed to live in Islamabad after 31 December. If they wish to stay, they must obtain a residence permit (NOC) from the commissioner's office. Further details will be shared in the coming days, and we will notify them (Afghans) through every possible channel. However, after 31 December , no Afghan without a residence permit will be allowed to live in Islamabad."
Nazar Nazari, a migrant rights activist highlighting the need to establish a joint committee between Afghanistan and Pakistan said: "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan must pay more attention to Afghan migrants by working with the Pakistani government to create a joint committee to address their issues."
The UNHCR report stated: UNHCR has assisted almost 115,600 Afghan returnees from Pakistan, including 74,300 Proof of Registration (PoR) Card holders, since September 2023.”
UNHCR criticized Pakistan for forced deportation of 74300 refugees having proof of registration , according to UNHCR, refugees have the right to seek asylum, protection from force-able deportation and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, and work opportunities.
They are entitled to live in dignity and be treated with respect. UNHCR advocates for their right to non- discrimination and safety under international law.
