PM Sheikh Hasina Launches New Regional Office of Global Center on Adaptation

DECCA, 10 September 2020, TON: Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the new regional office of Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) on 8th September 2020 at Dhaka in Bangladesh. It is the first regional-office of the Global Center on Adaptation in South Asia. The opening of the regional adaptation center was to the remanence of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.In this inaugural ceremony, the former UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte, as well as CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation, Patrick Verkooijen, had virtually connected with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In this virtual launch event, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh mention various climate change ongoing initiatives formulated her government as such Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan in 2009, Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100. She said her country's climate change vulnerability situation and how she built resilience against natural disasters.

"I hope this regional office will share the best adaptation practices of Bangladesh as well as other countries and exchange practices within the region. It will serve as a Center of Excellence and a solution-broker for adaptation measures in the region", she said.

Sheikh Hasina invited other Ministers of South Asian countries including Pakistan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, Bhutan to work together and cooperate to prevent upcoming climate-change disasters. She highlighted that is a need to work together to enhancer nationally determined Contributions by 31st December 2020 in tackling their climate emergency and implement the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Mark Rutte,Prime Minister of the Netherlands, welcomed Bangladesh on opening GCA regional office. He had pointed out the awareness of climate adaptation and reduce carbon footprint. He also said the investment of showing cost money in this initiative in which the long-term benefit will be tremendous to adapt to the disasters moment.

Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation, said that there are many innovative solutions to improve climate resilience in South Asian countries. All have to implement to combat challenges facing the region.

The Global Center on Adaptation is a solution-broker international organization to accelerate action and support to adaptation solutions. It works together from the international to the local level for a climate-resilient future.
