Bangladesh Foreign Minister: The UN Should Help Rohingyas Shifted to Bhasan Char

DHAKA, 8 December 2020, (TON):  More than 1600 Rohingyashave voluntarily moved to Bhashan Char on 4th December. On 7th December, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh highlighted that Bangladesh has been managing the Rohingya Crisis according to the guidelines of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has explained that the UN should assist and support the Rohingya people who moved voluntarily to Bhashan Char rather than giving high importance to the camp’s location. Whether they settle in Kutupalong camp or Bhashan Char, the UN should help the Rohingyas.

Bangladesh government expanded approximately USD 35 crore in the development of the Char. The area is about thirteen thousand-acre which is equipped with modern infrastructural development for the settlement of Rohingyas. The government has arranged food and safe drinking water for them in the Char.

AK Abdul Momen has clarified that the Rohingyas shifting would not be a barrier to the repatriation process of them to Myanmar. Instead, the moved displaced Rohingyas would be given priority on their repatriation.

He has addressed Bangladesh's rescuing 300 Rohingyas from the middle of the Bay of Bengal. The Foreign Minister quoted, “ No country accepted the floating Rohingyas while saving them was an equal obligation to the other eight neighboring countries.”

Nearly 900000 Rohingya population living in the camps of Cox's Bazar. Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner, tweeted on Sunday, “UNHCR and UN partners seek access to them in order to hear their voice, understand their wishes and see conditions on the island. Any transfer must follow a voluntary, informed decision.”
