COLOMBO, 26 September 2020 (TON): India had announced a solar project for Sri Lankan household and government offices during the International Solar Alliance Founding Conference held in March, 2018 at New Delhi.
Colombo, confirming $100million Line of Credit from Indian Government, said that it will comprise of three solar projects, covering financing for rooftop solar systems of 20,000 households and 1000 government buildings. In addition, the Line of Credit will also finance floating solar power plant.
Although, India has given Line of Credit to Sri Lanka but many politician are concerned about Indian involvement in the internal affairs of Colombo. In the past, New Delhi had been funding and arming the Tamils but at the same time was also cooperating with Sri Lankan authorities in the operation against selected Tamil entities by furnishing Intelligence input and identifying their whereabouts.
It is on record that Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa was critical of Indian failure to reciprocate and instead chose to be intrusive on the Sri Lankan Tamil problem. Sri Lanka is also aggrieved that its request for the pardon of its nationals, alleged to be involved in assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, have not been pardoned. Indian PM Modi has also been forwarded mercy appeal in the same regard.
