GILGIT, 16 January 2021, (TON): A team of Nepalese climbers on Saturday made history by scaling the world’s second highest peak the K2 in the winter season. Nepali Sherpas reached the summit around 5 pm. Nepalese Climbers finally reached the summit of Mt. K2 (Chhogori 8611m).
The K2, a 8,611 metres high was attempted by 10 Nepali Sherpas who reached the summit around 5 pm. Winter winds on K2 can blow at more than 200 kilometers per hour (125 miles per hour) and temperatures drop to minus 60 degrees Celsius (minus 76 Fahrenheit). No mountaineers had reached higher than 7,750 metres, until Saturday when fair weather conditions allowed the climbers to push ahead.
The first climb of the season took place on Wednesday when a five-member team of rope fixing climbers from Nepal, comprising Lakpa Dendi Sherpa, Lakpa Temba Sherpa, Nirmal Purja, Chhangba Sherpa and Gesman Tamang stood atop the peak, opening a route to the summit point. Successful who ascended K2 on Thursday include Chhepal Sherpa (Nepal), Nima Thinduk Sherpa (Nepal), Temba Bhote (Nepal), Kasng Dawa Sherpa (Nepal),
One of the ten Nepalese climbers, Mingma G, also became the first mountaineer to summit the peak in winter without an oxygen cylinder. The death of a Spanish mountaineer, Sergi Mingote, who died at the Base Camp was part of the expedition but not among the team trying to reach the peak was an unfortunate event.
