Turkish President Erdogan and Question of Kashmir at UNGA by Aroosa Hafeez

People of Kashmir are yearning for freedom. While the leaders of Muslim Ummah are numb, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan steps in for the second year at United Nations General Assembly and raised the voice for the people of Kashmir and showed his clear stance on Jammu and Kashmir.

As earlier Erdogan was criticized globally for changing Hagia Sophia previously a museum into mosque. Many countries urged him to reverse his decision. He rejected all the criticism and changed the status of landmark Hagia Sophia into mosque. He took a firm stand and said that it is our sovereign right to use country’s will. However Muslim leaders welcomed his decision. President Erdogan got immense love and respect from Muslim people and leaders around the globe.

Erdogan never overlooked the situation of Muslim nations. He always took stand for Muslim nations. When all the flag bearers of Islam remained silent Tayab Erdogan was the only one who fully supported Kashmir. Once again Racep Tayyip Erdogan at United Nations General Assembly backed Kashmir and showed his strong support for Pakistan which also reflected the depth of relations between both the countries. Turkey and Pakistan have historically good relations. Both countries expanded their support for each other during the most difficult times. Turkey had continued supporting Pakistan over the years and now Turkey is openly supporting Pakistan on Kashmir conflict.

Erdogan in his address through video link at UNGA said that “The issue must be resolved through dialogue between both Pakistan and India. The Kashmir conflict is the key for lasting stability and peace in South Asia, is still a burning issue". Turkish President Erdogan emphasized on resolving the dispute through UN resolutions and laws.  He also said many times that Kashmir dispute should be resolved with the aspirations of Kashmiri people.

Its more than a year now that India keeps Kashmir under lockdown. Indian forces escalate violence and brutality against civilians. According to some Human right organizations thousands of Kashmiri people have been killed since 1989. It is our moral responsibility to protect Kashmiri people and advocate their right to freedom and sovereignty. India started demographic flooding in Muslim majority region by abrogating article 370 and 35a and announced new set of laws for Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir but Muslim nations and international community is failing in paying attention to Kashmir conflict. Erdogan statement on Kashmir at UNGA once again revived Kashmir issue.

Muslim countries should put up a unified front against the violations done by India in Kashmir. Collective effort of Muslim countries could possibly resolve the Kashmir dispute. However
It wouldn’t be wrong in saying that Erdogan is the most influential leader of the century for Muslims of the world. Kashmiris will always consider Erdogan as their great friend who supported them at every forum of the world but question still remains that will Kashmiri’s ever get a chance to decide their own fate?
