ADDIS ABABA, 15 November 2020, (TON): Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed deployed military on to counter Tigray regional government after blaming them for carrying out a deadly attack on a military base. The operation killed hundreds of locals and made thousands to leave their house, In the recent development, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has given an ultimatum to rebel forces to surrender. Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen assured international community in Ethiopia that the government was keen to achieve its goals to crush Tigray forces to end fighting in the Tigray region.
The current tensions in Ethiopia began in August after the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed-led government rescheduled elections for next year because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the regional government of Tigray organized its own elections in September with over two million people going to the polls. The Ethiopian government of Prime Minister Abiy, in retaliation, placed sanctions on the Tigray state and also imposed a six-month-long state of emergency on Tigray, declaring its legislature void. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is the son of a Muslim father and a Christian mother, which has made his approach somewhat anti-Muslim. Due to various demographic changes during the interval of censuses, now it is claimed that Christian form nearly 40 percent of the 110 million population. His tilt towards Christians and anti-Muslim policy embodied in interfaith harmony has faced resistances everywhere. In addition, the interference by the foreigners, especially Westerners have experienced serious resistance from the country’s elites.
It is interesting to note that UN is there is Ethopia since long and over 800 humanitarian workers reside in the Tigray region but peace could not be restored.
In the meantime, an Eritrean priest, Abba Mussie Zerai, aka Don Mussie Zerai, aka Dr. Abba Mussie Zerai, Aka Moses Zerai and Aka Dr. Father Moses who is a Roman Catholic priest of the eparchy of Asmara has appealed for the protection of Eritrean Christians refugees who are in the Tigray region. In a statement he said, “In Tigray, there are thousands of Eritreans who are often hungry and exposed to all forms of exploitation and abuse. This situation increases the despair of these people and drives them into the hands of human traffickers. ” Interestingly, Mussie Zerai has lived in Italy for more than 25 years, since fleeing Eritrea as a teenager. He maintains links with Medecins Sans Frontieres, Migrant Offshore Aid Station and is also accused of working for NGO Jugend Rettet, which is in direct contact with human traffickers.
