Prince Harry arrives in Canada and begins new life away from the royal family

NBC news:Prince Harry arrived in Canada on Monday evening to begin a new life away from the royal family after a tumultuous few weeks in London, where he and his wife, Meghan, announced their intent to step back from their roles.

 

The prince, a grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and sixth in line to the throne, was shown arriving on Vancouver Island by Sky News after he left the United Kingdom to join his wife and son. Meghan and the couple’s eight-month-old, Archie, have been staying on the island since she left the U.K. a week and a half ago.

 

Harry’s departure came after one of his last — if not the last — official royal appearances Monday, attending a summit for leaders of 21 African countries in London hosted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson

 

Imran seeks Trump’s mediation on Kashmir issue in Davos meeting

Express Tribune:Prime Minister Imran Khan has once again expressed his desire for mediation by the United States on the Kashmir issue between the two hostile South Asian neighbours – Pakistan and India.

He conveyed his message to President Donald Trump on the sidelines of ongoing World Economic Forum in the Davos as the two leaders meet for the third time in less than a year amid reports that the US and Afghan Taliban are close to striking a peace deal after over yearlong painstaking process.

Foreign Secretary apprises Wells of ‘grave human rights’ situation in IOK

DAWN: Chief US diplomat for South Asian affairs, Alice Wells, met Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood on Tuesday, where the two officials discussed a range of bilateral issues, including political engagement and economic partnership, a Foreign Office statement said.

During the meeting, the foreign secretary and Wells, who is the acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, emphasised that a strong trade and investment relationship was key to advancing the shared vision of the leadership of both countries for a long term, broad-based and enduring partnership.

The foreign secretary, for his part, highlighted the grave human rights and humanitarian situation in India-Occupied Kashmir (IOK), “intensified ceasefire violations from the Indian side, belligerent rhetoric of the Indian civil and military figures, and India’s aggressive measures along the Line of Control”. He further stressed the need for the international community to play its role in the peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, said the Foreign Office spokesperson.

Global Unemployment projected to rise by around 2.5 million in 2020: UN labour report

 

Sakaltimes:Global unemployment is projected to increase by around by 2.5 million in 2020 and almost half a billion people are working fewer paid hours than they would like or lack adequate access to paid work, according to UN’s International Labour Organization report

The International Labour Organization (ILO) forecasts that unemployment will rise by about 2.5 million this year. The ILO is a UN agency whose mandate is to advance social justice and promote decent work by setting international labour standards.

IAF Sqn No 222 re-energized with Tigersharks

 

The Statesman:Sqn No 222 was raised at Ambala on 15 Sep 69 with Su-7 aircraft. Later, the squadron moved to Halwara in Jul 71 and was soon made to engage in active combat OPs in the 1971 war.

 

The squadron launched counter airstrikes against Risalewala and Chander airfields with immense success despite intense enemy opposition, then at that time. Close air support was centered around Dera-Baba-Nanak, Hussainiwala and Firozpur sectors. In the post-war period, the unit continued its relentless task of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and gained wide acclaim for exercises, gunnery meets and inspections. The Sqn shifted back to Ambala in May 75 and further to Hindon in May 81. In Dec 85 the squadron became the first unit in the IAF to be equipped with MiG-27 aircraft and was named “The Tigersharks”.

North Korea may seek "new path" after U.S. fails to meet deadline

Morung Express:North Korea on Tuesday said as the United States had ignored a year-end deadline for nuclear talks, it no longer felt bound by its commitments, which included a halt to its nuclear testing, and may "seek a new path".

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un set a Dec. 31 deadline for denuclearisation talks with the United States and White House national security adviser Robert O'Brien said at the time the United States had opened channels of communication.

O'Brien said he hoped Kim would follow through on denuclearisation commitments he made at summits with U.S. President Donald Trump.

"We found no reason to be unilaterally bound any longer by the commitment that the other party fails to honour," Ju Yong Chol, a counsellor at North Korea's mission to the United Nations in Geneva, told the U.N.-backed Conference on Disarmament.

Europe row: Iran may pull out of N-deal

 

Deccan Chronicle:Iran said on Monday it will consider withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) if a dispute over its atomic programme goes before the UN Security Council.

Britain, France and Germany launched a process last week charging Iran with failing to observe the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal, a move that could eventually see the Security Council reimpose international sanctions on the country.

Despite protests, CAA will not be withdrawn: Amit Shah

 

Deccan Chronicle: Defending his brainchild, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the new law will not be scrapped despite the countrywide protests against it.

Addressing a rally here to drum up support for the CAA, Shah also declared that construction of a Ram temple "touching the skies" in Ayodhya will begin within three months.

He said there is no provision in the amended law for taking anyone's citizenship away. "A canard is being spread against the CAA by the Congress, SP, BSP, and Trinamool Congress. The CAA is a law to grant citizenship," he added.

"I want to say that irrespective of the protests this will not be withdrawn," he added.

India wants equitable terms in our trade relations with various countries: Goyal

 

Thehindubusinessline: Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday called for greater cooperation among various nations to realise the huge growth prospects in the Indian Ocean region and also for tackling the important issue of climate change.

He said India has contributed the least to global warming, but is still being very responsible on fossil fuels, while the western world is not doing enough even after accounting for more than half of the carbon emissions.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, Goyal said India is committed to safeguarding the interest of its people while welcoming investors from across the world by making regulations easier for them.
