SANTIAGO, 15 March, 2021 (TON): On Sunday, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced to extend the April Constitutional Convention elections from day one to two.
"I am sure that with the support and collaboration of all, as we have had an exemplary vaccination process, recognized and appreciated throughout the world, on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11, we will also have an exemplary election that honors our democratic tradition," he said.
In these elections, 155 people will be chosen for drafting a new constitution in the hope of resolving the social crisis that erupted In October 2019.
This follows the 2020 Chilean national plebiscite, where 78 percent of voters approved the writing of a new text.
However, as the cases of the COVID-19 have decreased in only four regions of the country in the last week while they have risen in others, the Health Minister reported.
Therefore, amid the ongoing crisis, the announcement was made, as the country has been under a state of emergency lately due to the pandemic and Congress has approved the extension this week to cope with the situation.
