LESBOS, 10 September 2020, TON: The largest migrant camp Moria caught fire and it left thousands of people homeless in Greece’s Lesbos Island. The people living in Moria are the asylum seekers and the fire increases their tension even more.
According to the reports, more than 12,000 men, women, and children were using the containers and tents as a roof and the fire let them ran in panic. The fire burnt the squalid camp and the people ran in the fields and olive groves in a panic to save their lives and their children.
The thing that raised the eyebrows of the masses is fire caught the camps exactly after the few hours of a minister’s statement that almost 35 people have been tested positive in the camp. Moreover, one of the Greeks police officers said that “the fire had started after a revolt by people who were tosent in isolation, but there was no official confirmation."
On the other hand, an official of the local town claimed that “the perpetrators had taken advantage of strong winds and deliberately set tents on fire."
Nevertheless, it is considered to be a massive fire in the history of Moria, but luckily no causalities have been reported yet. Several people are suffering from minor burns and injuries. The Deputy Regional Governor ArisHatzikomninos said “There is no Moria it has been destroyed."
On the other hand, European Union home affairs commissioner Ylva Johansson said that “the bloc would finance the immediate transfer and accommodation on the mainland of the camp’s remaining 400 unaccompanied children and teenagers”. Moreover, the officials are taking mandatory steps to ensure the safety of the Moria people and to shelter them.
